‘Can We Be Alone’ - NU-WRLD

‘CAN WE BE ALONE?’

Greensboro, NC based Alternative collective, NU-WRLD create a dreamy world of romantic connection and yearning in their ethereal debut single.

GENRE: ALTERNATIVE

One of the most awe-striking things about music is its ability to bring people together. Even the most talented and gifted individual artists find themselves working with others to produce their projects. There's really no escaping community in this art form. Musicians are opening up to new sounds and ways of creating, without forcing themselves into the constraints of one genre. For some reason, there’s something really appealing about forming a band. A group of like-minded music geeks singing about a shared sense of anxiety and emotional engulfment? It’s basically therapy, just less tears and insurance bills.

There’s several creatives who have decided to simply veer into groups or “collectives”, allowing expressive freedom to reign between the artists. Everyone is a part of the whole, but still has the ability to venture into other artistic pursuits. We think of collectives like MSFTSrep, BROCK HAMPTON, and The Internet. Tons of young, ambitious people are exploring this avenue of collaborative art.

Greensboro, NC collective NU-WRLD, recently formed in the past year and have released their debut single ‘Can We Be Alone?’, this November. Immersed with spacey guitar reverb and vocal overlay, NU-WRLD creates a dreamy world of longing and desire. Berry Jones intones, “You said you loved me/Even though I’m too young, too dumb, too drunk”, at the start of the track. Jones’ voice is a cascading alto ribbon of ecstasy. In its entirety, the song unveils to be an ethereal ride along the trail of looping guitar duo that is Roza & Cerros, seductive, yet sultry harmonies by Kylah Leshon and a haunting deep vocal register by Royal Marquis. NU-WRLD truly encapsulates what it feels like to have one’s heart strings plucked and strummed by a lover who may not be ready to receive love. “I feel no malice, just solace”, a line that stings just a little too good. Though fresh on the scene and still defining their sound, NU-WRLD gives a little Alt R&B with a splash of Neo-Soul. It’s really hard to tell where they’re headed next, but either way, we know they will bring the vibes.
