‘Universe Wrapped In Flesh’ - Lexa Gates

‘Universe Wrapped In Flesh’

Lexa Gates’ fourth album brings with it authentic fervor and zeal. The Queens, New York rapper/singer conveys themes of transformation, self-reflection, and life in just 30 minutes.

GENRE: HIP-HOP/RAP

A little over a year since the release of her last album ‘Hungry’, Queens, New York rapper/singer Lexa Gates is back with more of her bare bones, entangling listeners in a sampled sea of emotions and feelings. Fans of lo-fi chill beats and even 90s boom bap will find themselves pleasantly surprised with her latest album release. ‘Universe Wrapped in Flesh’ begins with an alluring piano sample while she speaks the truth about her proud personality. You’ve got Hip-Hop artists who may go for the heavy talk-my-shit track straight off the bat, singling themselves out as “the baddest”, “the goat”, or any other accolade they assign to their character. Lexa seems to go an alternative route. She’s like: I’m a little this, a little that. I’m the shit, but also I’m just me. Who really knows the real me? Talk about relatable. She’s not afraid to address her true nature and transpose that sentiment through the art of song.

Universe Wrapped in Flesh’ pulls at that part of your heart that trips up when that one person’s name gets brought up in a conversation. It’s a journal entry of a time of new beginnings and ends, transformative choices, relationships, love, remorse, reflection, and the list continues. One word comes to mind: fervor (and the instruments in life that bring that forth). This album is a solid contribution to Hip-Hop. Production? Solid. Vocals? Solid. Message? Solid and true. We think that's what truly makes Hip-Hop. It’s simple, straight to the point, and conveys the earnest emotion of the artist performing it. Each track pulls you into a different journey of her life like she’s painting a story at every minute.

A memorable track from UWIF? How about we drop three, because why not? ‘Sfcd’, ‘I’m All The Way In’, and ‘The Person That I Was Before’. These three are our go-to’s, but honestly, the entire album is worth the 30 minutes. Take a walk, a drive, a skate, and just vibe to the sensorial tones of Lexa Gates. And if you’re like us and can’t stand to wait for new music, check out her SoundCloud where she consistently releases new tracks. Check out the video for track 10 ‘Rotten to the Core' while you’re at it. It’s giving fun, DIY, independent goodness.
